Powering Community and Nature: Sugar Hollow Solar's Partnership with Earthshine and New Fundraiser
At Sugar Hollow Solar, we believe in harnessing the power of the sun to not only power homes but also empower communities. For years, we’ve partnered with various nonprofits, contributing a portion of our referral bonuses to support their vital work. In 2024, we proudly teamed up and contributed thousands of dollars to MountainTrue, and 2025 is shaping up to be just as exciting with our new nonprofit partner: Earthshine Nature Programs.
Founded by Steve O’Neil (aka Science Steve), Earthshine is a small but impactful organization dedicated to teaching nature, science, wildlife conservation, and renewable energy through engaging, hands-on education. You may have seen Steve and his amazing animal ambassadors at events like LEAF Festival in Black Mountain or Earth Fest in Hendersonville. He’s often accompanied by the SS NaSA PoD (Science Steve’s Nature and Science Adventure Pod of Discovery)—a unique, solar-powered mobile classroom designed to bring interactive programming to outdoor spaces. This year, we’re taking our community support a step further. After witnessing the devastating impacts of Hurricane Helene and how renewable energy kept homes and community hubs powered during widespread outages, we realized how crucial it is to make renewable energy more accessible. Inspired by this need, we’re excited to launch the Repower WNC Fund! Through this initiative, we’re partnering with Earthshine’s Community Assistance Program (ENCAP) to expand access to renewable energy solutions, ensuring that more families and organizations can stay connected and resilient in the face of future challenges.
What is ENCAP?
ENCAP aims to provide sustainable community assistance using solar-powered, all-electric vehicles. These vehicles will deliver supplies, offer disaster recovery, and act as mobile power sources for events, nonprofit projects, and emergency needs. Environmental efforts of the program include conservation, cleanups, and invasive species removal. The program is also working to be able to deploy "Power Pods," which are portable units made from repurposed EV batteries, to supply electricity during outages. Powered by locally-sourced solar energy, this initiative aims to reduce costs and environmental impact while supporting individuals and organizations in need—all at no charge to recipients. Read more about the ENCAP program here.
A Commitment to Giving Back
As part of Sugar Hollow Solar's Repower WNC Fund initiative, 10% of all funds raised will go directly to ENCAP, while the remaining funds will be earmarked for community renewable energy projects. This includes donating solar systems or other renewable energy solutions to community nonprofits that can serve as vital hubs during times of crisis. This critical support not only advances ENCAP's mission to preserve nature and educate future generations but also ensures assistance reaches those who need it most.
We’re also thrilled to share that as members of the National Solar Cooperative, Amicus Solar Cooperative, we’re part of a larger movement already making a powerful impact. Together, Amicus members have collectively divested tens of thousands of dollars of their dividends into this cause, amplifying its reach and impact. Being a certified B Corporation and a member of this cooperative allows us to do more—combining local action with national collaboration to create meaningful change.
The remaining proceeds from the Repower WNC Fund will support smaller-scale renewable energy initiatives, such as providing affordable energy solutions for community spaces or essential equipment for nonprofits that need it most. These efforts ensure we can continue creating resilient, sustainable communities across Western North Carolina.
Solar Energy Meets Creative Giving Back Opportunities
The program features tax-deductible opportunities to donate, or unique merchandise to purchase designed by the talented local Asheville artist, Tricia Tripp of Winter Magnolia Designs, who was herself impacted like so many other creative professionals due to Hurricane Helene. These items not only make great gifts but also support clean energy projects and environmental resilience. With each purchase, you're contributing to a sustainable future while helping local organizations thrive.
This initiative reflects our core belief: sustainability isn't just about energy; it's about building resilient, connected communities. We’re proud to play a role in fostering positive change in our region.
