NC Duke Energy Solar Rebate Update & Promotion

In July of 2021 there was a last minute and significant change made to the Duke Energy NC Solar Rebate so we ran a promotion to help cover the loss. The below content was written on or before December 2021.
First, a bit of history about the rebate, it was a program by Duke Energy in 2018 meant to make solar more affordable to homeowners, businesses, and nonprofits. And it really worked. We saw how much the rebate, which at that time was up to $6000 for homeowners, helped bring the cost of going solar down. As the solar market has grown, however, the rebate that was first-come, first-serve filled up faster and faster. As a local company who cares about helping make solar affordable for our customers, we figured out how to set our customers up to apply at just the right time and our customers’ success rate was 95% for the duration. This absolutely made solar more accessible to people on a budget.
The recent changes:
We lobbied against these changes but alas, we’re a small voice when it comes to the power that Duke Energy has. The first change is that the dollar amount of the rebate decreased. That’s never ideal, but it’s ok and makes sense with the lowering of costs to go solar otherwise. The hard-to-accept change is that the rebate is now a lottery. Duke Energy spins this as a positive because everyone has the same chance to receive it, but the truth is, if it’s a lottery and therefore a total shot-in-the-dark as to whether any individual will receive it, no one who needs the rebate in order to afford solar would take the risk. Hence effectively negating the solar boost that the rebate was meant to achieve.
Sugar hollow’s duke solar rebate guarantee:
It’s important to us that solar remain accessible, and the rebate was a driver in that so we’re running a Winter Promotion (now through January 31st) where anyone who signs a Solar Contract with us in this time will be guaranteed ½ of the rebate (up to a $2000 value*) by us. The stipulations are that you have to apply for the rebate and commit to having your system installed and turned on by the end of the year.
